Charter

The purpose of the Shops subcommittee is to oversee the operation and policies related to the shop areas and equipment at Nova Labs.

Structure

The subcommittee will have at minimum three officers: a Chair, Vice Chair, and Secretary. If necessary, multiple officer positions may be held by one person. The committee may have as many additional members or officer positions as they choose.

Powers & Responsibilities

The Shops subcommittee will manage the shop areas and equipment at Nova Labs and organize and arrange the shop space into subdivisions as necessary.

The Shops subcommittee will purchase, manage, and maintain the tools available to the membership. The subcommittee will organize or assign specific tools or categories of tools to shop subdivisions as necessary.

The Shops subcommittee will nominate one or more members to act as the “Steward” of the subdivisions (e.g., “Woodworking”) and forward that recommendation to the Board of Directors for approval.

The Shops subcommittee will nominate instructors to provide instruction on the use of the tools available to the membership for maker activities.

The Shops subcommittee will specify the training curricula for training users on the safe use of tools and spaces available for membership.

The Shops subcommittee will determine the availability of the spaces and tools for members or events.

The Shops subcommittee will submit proposals for new tools, equipment, or supporting software outside of the subcommittee operating budget to the Operations Committee for approval.

The Shops subcommittee will originate policy changes that relate to shop spaces and maker tools and equipment.

Budget

The Shops subcommittee will provide budget proposals for the shop spaces, tools, and equipment. The subcommittee may subdivide the budget proposals as necessary. The budget proposals will be submitted on a periodic basis as set forth by the Finance Committee.
